THE SPANISH VOTE

Since the Spanish community became the second most numerous population in the United States replacing the Black community; the mass media, politicians and community activists have began making cheerful counts in which they sustain that we can incline the balance in favor of either the Democratic or Republican parties. This calculation can be real or unreal depending on the seriousness and maturity the Spanish community assumes the political challenger in this grand and powerful country that has received us and has given us all, only asking in return to work for the enlargement of this beautiful country.

The past political contests have been very competitive and have been defined for a small amount of voting. However, in order for the Spanish vote to effectively demonstrate and contribute to incline the balance in one way or another, it is absolutely necessary that these votes go united in block to one political party or the other. Otherwise, although these divided votes in fact define an election, these will never be considered as such the Spanish community would have been the determining factor of the reached victory.

The Italian population has experienced in its history something related to this issue in the 80’s. This country was politically divided approximately like this: Democratic Christians 40%, communists 40%, Socialists 10% and others parties 10%. Therefore, Bettino Craxi, President of Socialists Party, governed this country for 2 periods after having negotiated with the Democratic Christians. As you can see, the United States presents the same characteristics because the Democratic Party are approximately 35%, Republicans 35%, Spanish 13 %, Blacks 12% and other communities 5%. Either the Spanish community or the Black community could incline the balance. If they were to unite, they could lead this country using Craxi’s formula.

In theory, it would be easy to unite the Spanish people in the same flag because we have similar history; enthusiasm, longing and frustration. But in practice, this is almost impossible, in view of the fact that, there is a strong combination of lack of political maturity, not to say ignorance; and selfishness on the part of its political leaders. Nonetheless, this will not be an obstacle for future Garibaldis, Napoleons, Bolivars, Gandhis, Kings and Washingtons to come attempting to do so.

I liked the way as you transmit the current topics. In this case, I think that you are being romantic. It is naive to think in a spanish vote united.
